Employee accuses boss of illegal recruitment

Reinir Padua - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - An employee told police about her boss’ alleged illegal recruitment operation after the latter reportedly swindled P30,000 from her, police said yesterday.

Mercedita Dajotoy, 41, was arrested Thursday night and charged with two counts of estafa the next day, said Quezon City Police District (QCPD) director Senior Superintendent Richard Albano.

According to Albano, Dajotoy was arrested based on a complaint of her employee, Laila Mauricio, 29, who once served as her “business development manager.”

QCPD Station 6 commander Ramon Pranada said Dajotoy was also charged by Vanessa Santillan.

Santillan and Mauricio said they gave P30,000 each to the suspect, who promised them jobs in Palau by the end of January, according to Pranada.

Senior Inspector Virgilio Carodan said Dajotoy admitted she does not have accreditation from the government to send applicants for jobs abroad.

“But she (Dajotoy) claims to have sent workers abroad,” Carodan said in an interview.

According to Carodan, the woman promised the complainants they would be sent to the promised jobs abroad before the end of January.

Dajotoy claimed Mauricio was just disgruntled since she just wanted her money back and did not want to proceed with the application.

She also claimed Mauricio had even worked with her on the sending of the other job applicants abroad.
