MMDA unveils quake simulator

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) unveiled yesterday its earthquake simulator, which will be used to train its rescue personnel and educate the public, especially students, on earthquakes and their effects.

Called the “Shake, Rattle, and Learn House,” the hydraulically operated simulator could be set up to resemble a small house or a classroom and mimic seismic movement equivalent to an earthquake of magnitudes ranging from 4.0 to 8.0, MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said.

“To better understand earthquake and be prepared for it, we have to experience what it feels like to be in one. This will help raise the public’s awareness and knowledge about the earthquake phenomenon,” he said.

The MMDA’s earthquake simulator is similar to the one being used by experts from the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration. The MMDA’s simulator, which can be used by students on educational tours, can accommodate up to 10 people, he said.

“Earthquake simulation also teaches safe personal behavior and practice in case of an earthquake,” Tolentino said.
