MANILA, Philippines - Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim yesterday led the commemoration of the 68th anniversary of the Battle of Manila and the 18th anniversary of the unveiling of the Memorare Monument at Plaza Sta. Isabel in Intramuros.
Lim was joined by US Ambassador Harry Thomas, Manila Historical and Heritage Commission deputy chief Gemma Araneta, diplomats, city officials and students during the event.
In his speech, Lim recalled how bombs rained over Manila while helpless civilians were subjected to massive killing, torture and rape, leaving at least 100,000 dead.
The Battle of Manila was formerly called “Liberation of Manila.â€
Lim said the Memorare Monument was built in memory of those who perished during the Battle of Manila in 1955.
