MANILA, Philippines - The Association of Firearms and Ammunition Dealers (AFAD) yesterday pledges its support to the Philippine National Police (PNP) on its drive against loose guns.
In a statement, AFAD president Neri Dionisio said AFAD member dealers and gun clubs would be mobilized to encourage gun owners to renew their expired gun licenses to avoid criminal prosecution.
“The AFAD board has decided to help the government through an information campaign and convince gun owners with delinquent licenses to update their licenses. This is part of our responsibility of promoting responsible gun ownership,” Dionisio said.
PNP chief Director General Nicanor Bartolome has repeatedly issued warnings to gun owners with delinquent licenses, saying failing to renew their licenses would lead to the filing of charges of illegal possession of firearms.
According to PNP Firearms and Explosives Division, there are about 552,000 registered firearms with expired licenses.
