MANILA, Philippines - To prevent the possible spread of the avian flu virus in the country, Bureau of Customs Commissioner Rufino Biazon said yesterday they will destroy P40 million worth of frozen Peking duck and pigeon illegally shipped from China.
Biazon said that the 57-ton shipment, declared to contain frozen mackerel, arrived Oct. 15 in two 40-footer reefer containers at the Port of Manila.
“There is a bird flu scare or alert and this came from China so we would not allow them to reach the market,” he said.
