No LRT, MRT fare hike this year

- Rainier Allan Ronda - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) yesterday said that the proposed fare increases at the Light Rail Transit (LRT) Lines 1 and 2 and the EDSA-bound Metro Rail Transit (MRT) may not be pursued this year.

Lawyer Nicasio Conti, DOTC spokesperson, said the proposed fare hike at the three mass transit lines will likely be implemented next year.

Conti pointed out that the DOTC can still maintain the current fare rates because of the subsidy they are receiving from the national government.

The MRT, which runs from North Avenue to EDSA-Pasay Taft, currently has a maximum fare of P15 while the LRT Line 1 fare from Baclaran, Parañaque City to Balintawak, Quezon City is P20.

The LRT Line 2, on the other hand, has a maximum fare of P15.
