Makati deploys team to catch spike throwers along C-5 Road
Manila, Philippines - The Makati City police deployed yesterday a team to catch those responsible for throwing “spikes” along a portion of the C-5 Road near Kalayaan Avenue.
Acting city police chief Superintendent Jaime Santos said the team was deployed following reports that at least seven motorists had flat tires after running over the spikes, which he described as umbrella spines attached to pieces of rubber.
The spikes, police said, are designed to be driven deep into vehicle tires, causing them to get flat fast.
Aside from monitoring the area where the spikes are being thrown, in particular the elevated U-turn near Kalayaan Avenue, Makati policemen have also started nearby visiting vulcanizing shops.
The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) had earlier asked the Makati police for assistance after its officials suspected that some of these vulcanizing shops could be behind the spike attacks to get more customers.
“We have visited these vulcanizing shops and our policemen have warned them against doing these spike attacks. We will be watching them,” Santos said.
