Taguig marks Banak Festival
MANILA, Philippines - Taguig City is showcasing today the continuation of its colorful, four-centuries-old tradition on the Feast of St. Anne with 10-day festivities highlighted by a fluvial parade in honor of the patroness.
Mayor Lani Cayetano will lead the celebration of the festivity also known as the “Sta. Anang Banak Festival” coinciding with the city’s foundation day.
It was believed that the festival originated from a legend in July 1587 when residents of the area then known as “Taga giik” were said to have been saved by St. Anne who led them into a river teeming with banak fishes.
Cayetano led the opening of the celebrations last July 17.
She said the “Pagodahan” or procession of boats and floats will start from Taguig River to the Laguna Lake.
