Robbers shoot victim in eye

MANILA, Philippines - A factory worker was killed when he was shot in the eye and robbed by three men in Malabon City Thursday.

Bernaldo Batac, 22, told police he was walking with victim Rogie Mandin, 26, along Lascano street in Barangay Tugatog when three men accosted them at around 1:15 a.m. One of the robbers – later identified as pedicab driver Engelbert Catimon, 19 – reportedly shot Mandin in the right eye while his accomplices took his bag and cell phone.

Batac escaped and sought help. Bystanders brought Mandin to the Malabon Community Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

At the police station, Batac identified Catimon from file photos of suspected criminals.

Police officers arrested Catimon at a computer shop in Barangay Tugatog but failed to recover the gun used in Mandin’s killing. Catimon’s companions remain at large.
