Binay driver faces homicide raps
MANILA, Philippines - A driver of Makati Mayor Jejomar Erwin Binay Jr. was charged yesterday with reckless imprudence resulting in homicide and physical injuries after he hit a 14-year-old boy and his father as they crossed Osmeña Highway in Manila Thursday.
Eduardo Hernandez Jr., who was also a former driver of Vice President Jejomar Binay, was arrested by police after the incident and was subsequently booked at the Manila Traffic Bureau Enforcement Unit. Police investigators said Hernandez indicated that he was going to post bail.
Police said Hernandez had just come from a party and was drunk at the time he hit Joshua Danao and his father, Rolando Jr. Witnesses said Joshua died after he was dragged for 50 meters from the point of impact.
Binay’s media relations officer, Joey Salgado, said Hernandez works for the Binays but he will have to face charges. Hernandez was off-duty when the accident occurred, Salgado said.
