Man, 2 sons kill kin over family business

- Reinir Padua - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A man and his two sons were arrested for allegedly killing three of their relatives in Barangay Tatalon, Quezon City on Sunday following a dispute involving their family’s auto parts business.

Glenn Tan, 44, and his two sons – Amerson, 19; and Alaster, 18 – were accused of killing Grace Tan, Glenn’s elder sister; Arsenio, their brother; and Arsenio’s son, Anthony Michael, 25, according to Inspector Elmer Monsalve, who heads the Quezon City Police District’s homicide investigation section.

Police Officer 3 Loreto Tigno said Grace and Arsenio died on the spot, while Anthony was rushed to the Fe del Mundo Hospital but was declared dead on arrival.

Tigno said two other persons were wounded in the attack: Grace’s helper, Angeles Abante, 39; and Arsenio’s daughter, Abegail, 22.

In her sworn statement, Abegail said Glenn was asked to leave the family business because he was allegedly caught stealing and taking stocks without any delivery receipts. Glenn also has his own auto parts supply shop apart from the business with his siblings.

Abegail and her younger sister, Ann, have been staying with their aunt Grace since Abegail works and Ann studies in Metro Manila. Both sisters go home to Angeles City, Pampanga every Friday and are dropped off by their parents every Sunday at Grace’s house.

Abegail said Glenn and Amerson arrived at Grace’s house to discuss a problem involving their suppliers. Glenn, Amerson, Grace and Arsenio gathered in the kitchen, where Abante was working at the time.

Abegail said she stayed outside the door of the kitchen as she was curious about what the others were going to discuss. Her father was talking when she heard gunshots from the kitchen.

She said she rushed into the kitchen and saw her father on the floor with Amerson allegedly holding a gun. She said Amerson then shot at her, hitting her in the right hand.

Abegail said she quickly got out of the kitchen and took her mother and sister to the third floor fire exit. When they reached the rooftop, Abegail said she saw Alaster outside the house, allegedly acting as a lookout.

Residents were alarmed by the commotion and called up the police, who apprehended Glenn as he was about to escape aboard his Toyota Fortuner. They found in his possession a 9mm Glock handgun.

Following his arrest, Glenn’s two sons came out of their house, which is across Grace’s house, and surrendered to police.

Police found at the crime scene 21 shells, two deformed slugs and a .9mm bullet and a cartridge of a .38 caliber bullet.

Abante, who was shot in the back, is currently confined at St. Luke’s Medical Center while Abegail was treated at the Fe del Mundo Hospital.
