MANILA, Philippines - Caloocan Mayor Enrico Echiverri called on residents yesterday to help clean canals and estuaries in the city now that the rainy season has set in.
In a statement sent to The STAR, Echiverri said canals and estuaries serve as the channels for water to flow freely to its proper destination.
“That’s why intensive cleaning maintenance must be provided so that it will function well, especially during rainy days,” he said.
He also said clean canals and estuaries will help prevent floodborne diseases such as dengue and leptospirosis.
Echiverri said the city’s environment and sanitation services continues to clean up waterways and unclog canals to prevent or minimize flooding along the city’s primary roads and residential areas.
Liga ng mga Barangay sa Pilipinas president Councilor RJ Echiverri reminded barangay watchmen to bring their whistles, which can be used to warn people during evacuation and in emergencies.
