MPD tightens security over crime surge in nearby cities

- Ramil Bajo, Rey Galupo -

Manila, Philippines -  The Manila Police District (MPD) has tightened the security in the city of Manila in reaction to the spate of crimes in neighboring cities.

MPD director Alex Gutierrez said the directive was issued to serve as a deterrent to criminals.

“We would like to heighten our security measures in the district within our areas of responsibility and prevent criminals from doing their things,” Gutierrez said.

On Friday night, District Mobile Patrol Unit (DMPU) personnel conducted security and monitoring coverage along Roxas Boulevard, specifically at the United States embassy and the Museo Pambata, as well as the Ermita area. Ermita has been in the news lately because of criminals preying on tourists in the area.

The MPD also deployed more police officers at the Light Rail Transit, Metro Rail Transit, Philippine National Railways and other transportation stations.

DMPU personnel also heightened their watch around Malacañang Palace, the Pandacan oil depot, schools, churches, mosque, gasoline stations, markets and government and private installations.

The MPD also set up more choke points and dragnets in strategic areas within the city.
