MANILA, Philippines - The Parañaque City prosecutor’s office yesterday ordered the release of 16 of the 30 people arrested for allegedly attacking police officer in the violent Silverio Compound demolition that left one dead.
Those released were charged with disobedience or violation of the Article 151 of the Revised Penal Code. Their lawyer, Ana Luz Cristal, said 11 others have to stay in jail because they were also charged with illegal possession of explosives, for which there is no bail.
Three more were also charged with illegal possession of firearms, while one has a pending estafa case before a Makati regional trial court.
Community leader Shiel Bernal said other people helped them to pay the bail bond.
The demolition team from the city government was supposed to tear down only the flea market but the residents refused to let them in, thinking their shanties will be included.
