Pagasa warns of flash floods, landslides

- Ghio Ong, Helen Flores -

MANILA, Philippines - The weather bureau warned the public yesterday of possible flash floods and landslides as the tailend of a cold front will continue to bring moderate to heavy rains over most parts of the country, including Metro Manila, until the weekend.

Nathaniel Servando, administrator of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), said the tailend of a cold front will continue to affect Southern Luzon and Visayas until Sunday.

Servando said the rains caused by the weather system could trigger flooding in low-lying areas in Metro Manila.

“This weather system will bring cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms over Luzon and Eastern Visayas, becoming widespread rains over Quezon, Palawan and Bicol region,” Pagasa said in an advisory.

Pagasa officials earlier said the country will experience a “wet summer” this year due to the La Niña weather phenomenon, which is characterized by heavy rainfall. It is expected to fade by the end of April.
