Marikina asks revelers to keep noise down

MANILA, Philippines - Rampant complaints of noise pollution prompted Marikina Mayor Del de Guzman to remind residents to keep the noise down during parties and celebrations, especially during ungodly hours.

“We receive complaints on noises brought about by parties and business establishments with live bands, karaoke machines, and loudspeakers from different communities,” he said Saturday.

“We do not want to stop their enjoyment, however, it is also everyone’s right to live in a peaceful environment and have a good night’s sleep,” De Guzman added.

De Guzman pointed out that Ordinance 100, issued in 2010, states that unabated noise is considered a public nuisance and affects a person’s emotional and psycholo­gical wellbeing.

The ordinance states that the people most affected by noise pollution are usually the ones who need rest as they have school or work the following day.

Rizalina Teope, chairwoman of Barangay Fortune, said she receives many complaints about noises made by videoke machines used in parties to celebrate baptisms, birthdays and weddings.

Teope suggested that Barangay Fortune residents tone down their noise at 10 p.m., in accordance with the ordinance, and videoke machines should be turned off at midnight.
