Street kids steal Korean tourist's iPhone

- Sandy Araneta -

MANILA, Philippines - Around 20 street children mobbed a Korean tourist, asking for alms, then stole his iPhone in Malate, Manila Monday night.

Oh Young Jae was walking along Baywalk at around 8:20 p.m. when the street children, aged 10 to 12, approached him and asked for alms, Manila Police District Station 9 commander Superintendent Ernesto Tendero said. The tourist later discovered his iPhone, valued at $800 or approximately P35,000, had been stolen from his pocket.

Tendero said they have been rounding up street children in Malate and turning them over to the Manila social welfare department. However, these children return to the streets after a few days, he added.
