Baby dies as ma sleeps

MANILA, Philippines - A three-month-old girl reportedly died while her mother slept beside her in Tondo, Manila yesterday morning.

Joyce Ann Sarmiento was declared dead on arrival at the Tondo General Hospital, where Rose Ann, 23, delivered her normally last August.

Rose Ann told police she woke up at around 6:45 a.m. and noticed her baby was unconscious. She and husband Joseph, 29, rushed the baby to the hospital.

Rose Ann said she breastfed her baby at around 1:30 a.m., then they fell asleep on a bed they shared with her two other children, age five and three.

Senior Police Officer 3 Richard Lumbad said the baby showed no visible external injury. “Doctors who attended to her said she vomited milk while being resuscitated,” Lumbad told The STAR.

Lumbad said the baby may not be subjected to an autopsy anymore since the family issued a waiver on any further investigation.
