Doctor OKs colostomy reversal for Ivler

MANILA, Philippines - A doctor said murder suspect Jason Ivler can undergo surgery to reverse his colostomy once the inflammation of his colon subsides.

Dr. Romeo Abary of Quirino Memorial Medical Center told Judge Luisito Cortez that Ivler was given an antibiotic for the infection during the medical examination done on him Monday upon orders of the court to determine if the accused needed a procedure to reverse his colostomy.

“For reversal of colostomy after colitis (inflammation) subsided,” Abary stated in his medical brief. 

Senior Inspector John Conrad Basilio, jail warden of the Special Intensive Care Area in Camp Bagong Diwa where Ivler is detained, forwarded the initial findings to the court.

The doctor’s initial findings showed that Ivler, who is facing murder charges for allegedly killing Renato Victor Ebarle Jr. during a traffic altercation in 2009, had a smelly discharge from the colostomy, as well as bloodstains.

The hospital also conducted a colonoscopy on Ivler, during which a small camera was inserted through his anus to check the condition of his colon. The procedure was apart from the laboratory workup, ECG, X-ray and other examinations.

According to Abary, part of Ivler’s colon had colitis, or inflammation. The complete results of the medical examination will be discussed in court during a hearing on Friday.

Ivler was injured in a shootout with agents of the National Bureau of Investigation who arrested him at his mother’s house in January 2010. He had a colostomy following injuries to his intestines.

His lawyers have repeatedly asked the court to allow him to undergo the surgery to reverse his colostomy so he could defecate normally.
