MANILA, Philippines - The Department of Health (DOH) assured yesterday that the water coming from “service lines at home and in public establishments” in Metro Manila are free from the Escherichia coli bacteria.
According to Dr. Ed Janairo, DOH director for Metro Manila, the metropolis’ water supply tested negative for the bacteria that is commonly transmitted through the consumption of contaminated water or food such as raw milk and undercooked meat products.
Gastrointestinal infection by E. coli is characterized by abdominal cramps, diarrhea that may be bloody, fever and vomiting.
“There is really no need for concern as water coming from the two concessionaires - Maynilad Water Services, Inc. and Manila Water Co., Inc. have undergone strict examination and considered safe to drink,” Janairo said.
Citing a report submmited by the inter-agency Metro Manila Drinking Water Quality Monitoring Committee, Janairo said water samples collected from 1,228 water sampling points in the region have been certified of “sanitary quality.” This means that the total coliform count in the water “must not be detectable in any 100 milliliter sample.”
“In case of large quantities where sufficient samples are examined, it must not be present in 95 percent of samples taken throughout in a 12-month period from regular sampling points,” according to the DOH statement.
Janairo said if the water coming out of the faucet tests positive for E. coli, “you must immediately check your pipe connections at home.” He said wastewater may be seeping through the service line, and contaminating the supply.
“There are many ways where a person can be infected by E. coli. It can be contracted by drinking water, even if tap water contains chlorine and has undergone treatment. You can also acquire it by eating contaminated food, such as unpasteurized milk or fresh vegetables,” he warned.
Janairo added the bacteria could be spread from person to person so it is important for every one to observe sanitation and hygiene, including proper and constant washing of hands.
