MANILA, Philippines - A jail officer is facing homicide charges for allegedly shooting a former Japanese school professor in a restaurant in Pasay City Saturday afternoon.

Chief Inspector Reynaldo Paculan, chief of the city police investigation unit, said initial investigation revealed that it was victim Hardington Uy who provoked the fight that led to the shooting.

Paculan told The STAR senior jail officer Edgardo Almarines was about to pay his bill in 5 Kutsara restaurant along F.B. Harrison when Uy accosted him at about 4 p.m.

The gesture led to a scuffle before Almarines shot Uy in the abdomen using his service firearm, said Paculan.

Almarines fled but his superior officer surrendered him to the police before dawn yesterday.
