3 nabbed for selling endangered animals

-

MANILA, Philippines - Three persons were arrested in Tondo, Manila Wednesday night for allegedly trading in vulnerable and endanered species.

Alleged seller Luz Estacio, 56, was caught in a police buy-bust along with her reported suppliers James Ferolino and Jake Vargas, both from Palawan province.

The Manila Police District also recovered 69 mynah birds and a crested serpent eagle, classified as vulnerable species; and 17 Philippine pond turtles, critically endanged species found only in Palawan, from a house on Katamanan street.

Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim ordered the turnover of the animals to the Manila Zoo, while the arrested persons were charged with illegal sale and distribution of endangered species. – Nestor Etolle, Sandy Araneta
