2 guards nabbed for indiscriminate firing

MANILA, Philippines - Two security guards who were allegedly drinking on duty were arrested for firing their guns indiscriminately in Caloocan City Friday night.

City police chief Senior Superintendent Jude Wilson Santos said Roderick Cumla, 36; and Sherwin Jumagdao, 29, were apprehended for indiscriminate firing and illegal possession of firearms.

Witnesses said the guards were drinking while manning their post at the MGM Compound in Sitio Gitna, Kaybiga.

Cumla, carrying a .38 caliber revolver, allegedly accosted Ronald Palad and poked a gun at him. He then went looking for a jeepney driver he had allegedly quarreled with earlier.

Not finding his quarry, he turned his ire on a group of friends who were standing nearby and shot at Kim Bryan Carpio, Melbert Pineda and Palad. He missed.

Cumla returned to the barracks and brought Chavez, who was carrying a 12-gauge shotgun. The two men then fired at the boys, who ran away and sought police assistance.

Police officers arrested the guards, who allegedly failed to present documents for the guns they carried.
