QC eyes speed limits for 2 more roads

- Rhodina Villanueva -

Manila, Philippines - The Quezon City government announced yesterday that the city’s Mindanao Avenue and Elliptical Road will soon be covered by speed limits.

Mayor Herbert Bautista directed the city’s department of public order and safety (DPOS) to study the proposal to impose speed limits on other roads before the city government makes a proper recommendation to the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA).

For Mindanao Avenue, the mayor wants to impose the same 60-kilometer speed limit applied to Commonwealth Avenue while a lower speed limit has been proposed for Elliptical Road.

“The move to impose speed limits on QC’s two other major roads forms part of the city’s effort to ensure the safety of commuters and pedestrians from road accidents that usually results from overspeeding and reckless driving,” Bautista said.

He is also keen on implementing the city’s own traffic management plan that will include the continuous conduct of seminars for drivers of public utility vehicles plying major city routes.

Meanwhile, Bautista asked city liquor licensing and regulatory board chairman Alberto Galarpe to provide him with a copy of an ordinance on the selling and serving of liquors and its implementing rules and regulations to determine whether driving under the influence of liquor deserves harsher penalties.

The Quezon City Police District and the DPOS will provide him with statistics on the causes of vehicular accidents in the city, he said.
