MMDA, PNP give tips for vacationers

Manila, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) reminded vacationers yesterday to plan their trips ahead for the Holy Week.

MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said in a radio interview that the agency has deployed 1,900 personnel, including their medical teams, from April 16 to 27 to assist motorists, vacationers, and pilgrims.

“It is of utmost importance that motorists plan their trips out of Manila and back,” he said, adding that vacationers should bear in mind that the “Holy Week is a solemn occasion. This is not an outing, not a drinking event, or outdoor party.”

PNP-HPG spokesman Senior Superintendent Edwin Butacan expressed the same sentiment. He also warned motorists from parking their cars in unsecured or isolated areas.

“Drivers should never stay inside the (parked) vehicle and they should also avoid giving free rides to strangers,” Butacan said, adding drivers must make sure “they are physically fit” to be on the road and avoid alcoholic beverages.

Butacan said motorists should store emergency numbers on their cell phones or text the PNP-HPG at 726126.

Meanwhile, Manila Police District (MPD) director Chief Superintendent Roberto Rongavilla said yesterday he directed his 11 police station commanders to be prepared for terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage by criminals during the Holy Week.

He said command staff and station commanders should make sure that every Manila police officer is aware that criminals or terrorists can pose as law enforcers or victims of crime to gain entry into the police station.

MPD camp commander Chief Inspector Christian de la Cruz has doubled the number of sentry guards at all entrances and exits of the compound.
