Soldiers eyed to help MMDA enforcers

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is looking into the possibility of tapping soldiers of the National Capital Region Command (NCRCOM) to assist the agency’s traffic enforcers.

“They can assist us in directing traffic, especially in Cubao. We are still working this out with the NCRCOM,” MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino said during the “MMDA sa GMA” program aired over dzBB Sunday.

He said the soldiers can be deployed to help MMDA enforcers direct traffic along streets where military camps are located, such as Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City and the Camp Emilio Aguinaldo in Cubao, Quezon City.

Meanwhile, the MMDA is also looking into imposing a 60-kilometer per hour speed limit along Roxas Boulevard and Quirino Avenue in Manila.

Tolentino said they will still evaluate the result of the speed limit imposition along Commonwealth Avenue. According to the MMDA, since the speed limit was imposed Jan. 25, there have been no reported vehicular-related accidents along the road that has earned a reputation for being a “killer highway.”
