Cop tagged in Quiapo knifing based at SPD

MANILA, Philippines –  The Manila Police District (MPD) has launched a manhunt for a Southern Police District (SPD) policeman who reportedly stuck a fan knife into the skull of a reveler in Quiapo, Manila on New Year’s Eve.

Police Officer 1 Pedro Reyes, detailed at the SPD’s Logistics Unit, reportedly failed to report for work since the incident, according to PO2 Reginald de los Reyes of the MPD’s General Assignment Section.

“We have to personally request SPD officials to produce Reyes so he can answer the charges lodged against him. If he still fails to surface, the Manila police will hunt him down,” De los Reyes said.

The MPD said victim Christopher Jay Garcia, 23, were having a party along Carcer street and lighting firecrackers. When Reyes arrived at around 4 a.m., he ordered the residents to finish their party and go home.

Garcia, however, asked for more time since they have a permit from barangay officials. The two men argued, and Reyes reportedly challenged the partygoers to a gunfight.

Reyes drew out a knife and stabbed Garcia in the crown of his head and fled.

Garcia was rushed to the UST Hospital, where doctors removed the knife. He is still under observation at the hospital and his mother is seeking financial assistance to cover his medical expenses.

Reyes is facing frustrated murder charges.
