MANILA, Philippines - An 11-year-old girl was rescued after she was briefly buried in loose soil when a retaining wall beside a row of houses collapsed yesterday in Quezon City.

Barangay officials said Fritz Escala, of 33-A Libis Kaingin Road, was on her way to school when the incident happened. Quezon City rescue workers took her to the East Avenue Medical Center for treatment. Reports state Escala’s foot was broken.

No other persons were reported injured, missing or killed in the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 a.m.

A watchman of Barangay Apolonio Samson said a section of an old wall on Libis street, around 10 meters long, fell across an alley and effectively blocked the doors of several houses.

Frightened residents said they heard a loud crack and later found their doors blocked by soil.

Residents said a city hall rescue officer advised them to evacuate until authorities can assess the situation since parts of the wall still stand.
