MANILA, Philippines - Television host and basketball player Chris Tiu and a relative of Vice President Jejomar Binay are among the candidates who ran in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan polls in Makati City.
Born Christopher John Alandy-Dy Tiu, the former Blue Eagle player ran as councilman for the posh Barangay Urdaneta, where at least two high-end hotels are located.
A distant relative of Binay - Rodrigo ‘Jok jok’ Binay - ran as councilman for Barangay Olympia. Should he win, he would be the fourth Binay to occupy a government post. The two others are the Vice President’s children, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay Jr. and Makati Rep. Abigail Binay.
A son-in-law of former senator Aquilino Pimentel Jr. also competed for the chairmanship of Magallanes village, one of the richest in the country, against Armando Padilla.
Three barangay captain candidates ran unopposed in Makati: Rosanna Fores in Forbes Park; Ma. Arlene Ortega in Pio del Pilar; and Angela Regala in Urdaneta. –
