MPD to turn over grenade fragments to NBI

- Sandy Araneta -

MANILA, Philippines - The Manila Police District (MPD) will turn over the fragment of the MK-2 fragmentation grenade used in the explosion at the De La Salle University (DLSU) to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI).

This was revealed yesterday by lawyer Raul Villanueva, deputy court administrator and member of the Supreme Court committee investigating the DLSU blast, after the panel investigation hearing at the SC.

“They (police) will now turn over the fragments to the NBI for them to be able to likewise conduct their own examination of these fragments. So that is what we’re looking into right now in so far as today’s meeting is concerned,” Villanueva said.

Villanueva, the panel’s spokesman, said the fragments were examined by the police, who were able to determine what explosive was used.

He said the committee was created to identify the possible culprits, but also to craft measures to ensure the safety of Bar examinees and their supporters.

Villanueva said the importance of the fragment examination is for these pieces to be “macro-etched” to determine the serial number of the grenade and trace its source.
