MMDA unveils new motorbikes, pick-up trucks for emergency response

- Mike Frialde -

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) yesterday rolled-out its new fleet of motorcycles and pick-up trucks, which it said would boost their traffic management and roadside rescue operations.

MMDA Chairman Oscar Inocentes said the newly delivered 50 Pakistan-made Crown motorcycles and 10 Foton Blizzard 4x4 pick-up trucks will immediately be distributed to frontline units of the agency throughout Metro Manila.

“These new vehicles will not only improve our mobility but will also result to better service to the public, a smoother flow of traffic, and immediate assistance to those in need, especially motorists,” Inocentes said.

Inocentes said the new vehicles are specially fitted with sirens, blinkers and other important features for traffic and patrol purposes.

MMDA Deputy Chairman Cesar Lacuna said the vehicles were carefully selected by the MMDA based on the agency’s specifications.

According to Lacuna, the MMDA picked the China-made Foton Blizzard for its five-speed transmission and four-cylinder “Japanese-designed” diesel engine that gives it more speed and durability in high-stress road conditions.

“These pick-ups are for multiple purpose use because we at the MMDA are not only involved in traffic management. We also provide rescue and emergency services during times of disaster,” Lacuna said.

Lacuna said majority of the vehicles would be sent to the MMDA’s Traffic and Transport Management Office (TTMO), the MMDA’s traffic management arm, while some will go to the MMDA’s rescue and road emergency units.

MMDA General Manager Robert Nacianceno said the agency conducted an open bidding for the procurement of the new motorcycles and pick-up trucks.

Meanwhile, MMDA-TTMO Director Angelito Vergel de Dios said the MMDA will continue to seek ways to further improve the delivery of services to the people of Metro Manila.

“MMDA is synonymous to public service. All our projects and programs are geared to provide better quality of life to residents of Metro Manila, particularly in traffic matters,” Vergel de Dios said.
