MMDA deploys 2,000 enforcers to decongest Katipunan, U-belt

- Mike Frialde -

MANILA, Philippines - Noting the increase in vehicular traffic since the opening of classes last Tuesday, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said yesterday it has deployed 2,000 traffic enforcers to guide the flow of traffic in Manila’s University Belt area and along Katipunan Avenue in Quezon City.

Manila’s U-belt is where large schools such as the University of Santo Tomas, University of the East and Far Eastern University are located. The Ateneo University, Miriam College and the University of the Philippines are located in the vicinity of the Katipunan Avenue.

According to Angelito Vergel de Dios, director of the MMDA’s Traffic Operations Center, the traffic enforcers will remain deployed at the two areas until Saturday, when traffic conditions are expected to normalize.

Earlier, the National Capital Region Police Office reported that although the opening of classes was relatively peaceful, it was marked by heavy vehicular traffic, especially around schools.
