Korean deported for illegal gambling

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - A Korean national, who was allegedly caught operating an illegal online gaming business in Las Piñas, was recently deported to his native country, the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced yesterday.

In a statement, BI Deportation Unit chief Antonio Rivera told Commissioner Marcelino Libanan that Kwon Joong Teak was deported last June 10. He boarded a Philippine Airlines flight bound for Pusan, South Korea.

The agency’s Board of Commissioners issued a summary deportation order against Kwon, who was also fined P50,000 and included in the BI’s blacklist.

BI-NCR Overall Immigration Area director Patch Arbas said they caught Kwon at his house on Guada Sanchez street in BF Resort last March 29.

Arbas said their “arresting agents caught the Korean in the act of operating an Internet gaming shop without the required working visa from the BI.”

Immigration records show that Kwon was previously issued a visa to work at the Clark Freeport Zone, but the visa has expired and his status has been downgraded as a tourist.

Under the country’s immigration law, a foreigner is prohibited to work or engaged in gainful activity without securing a working visa from the bureau.
