DPWH hastens road repairs along España

- Evelyn Macairan -

MANILA, Philippines - An official of the Department of Public Works and Highways yesterday promised to finish the repairs along España Boulevard by next week in time for the opening of school classes.

Engineer Edilberto Tayao, DPWH-National Capital Region regional director, said that the rehabilitation along the major thoroughfare is one of the projects under the “Oplan Balik Eskwela.” Tayao said that they are bent on meeting their deadline so as not to add to the traffic congestion that would be experienced by motorists once school classes start on June 15.

Expected to be affected are the students enroled in schools located in the University Belt and the University of Sto. Tomas. “We are up to the challenge to work overtime on the road. Hopefully, we will finish it by next week,” Tayao said.

The DPWH-NCR is elevating the 45-lineal meter España Avenue by half a meter in a bid to solve the flooding problems in the area during the rainy season.

DPWH Undersecretary for Luzon Romeo Momo admitted that funding problems hampered the start of the repair. “We could have started the rehabilitation much earlier and finish it on time if not for the lack of funds.”

They allocated P38.952 million for the repair works of España. It would be spent for the concreting and widening of three lanes on both sides of the road.
