School exec killed in ambush

MANILA, Philippines - A school executive was killed in an ambush at the parking lot of a funeral parlor in Quezon City Wednesday night.

Chief Inspector Benjamin Elenzano, Quezon City Police District homicide chief, said Alvin Asuncion, 50, administrative services director of the Eulogio “Amang” Rodroguez Institute of Science and Technology in Manila, died of two gunshot wounds in the chest at the De los Santos Hospital. His wife, Melba, who was with him during the attack, was unhurt.

A police report stated that the couple had just come from the wake of Melba’s niece at the Funeraria Paz on Araneta Avenue and were about to leave in their Isuzu Crosswind when an owner-type jeep occupied by two men blocked their path at around 7:15 p.m. One of the men stood in front of the Crosswind and fired several shots at Asuncion.

Asuncion’s brother, Albert, 49, said his brother had no known enemies and has been with the school for over 20 years. He said a “watch-your-car” girl at the parking lot witnessed the shooting but refused to talk.

Elenzano said they are pursuing several leads to catch Asuncion’s killers.
