PNP cracks down on bets with blinkers, sirens
MANILA, Philippines - Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Director General Jesus Verzosa called on the public to help the police monitor candidates using blinkers and sirens during campaign sorties.
Verzosa earlier ordered the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) to accost candidates and members of their campaign convoy if they use blinkers and sirens during their sorties.
“We are now coordinating with LTO (Land Transportation Office) on the guidelines on the use of sirens and blinkers,” Verzosa said.
The PNP chief said the LTO can help the PNP step up the campaign against the unauthorized use of the gadgets by candidates who want other motorists to give way.
PNP spokesman Chief Superintendent Leonardo Espina said he personally coordinated with HPG director Chief Superintendent Orlando Mabutas on the campaign.
Under Presidential Decree 96, only motor vehicles designated for the use of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, LTO, Bureau of Fire Protection and hospital ambulances can be fitted with sirens, bells, horns or similar gadgets.
As for government officials, only the President, Vice President, Senate president, House Speaker, and chief justice are allowed to use vehicles with these devices.
