NCRPO releases sketch of gunman in slay try on cop

MANILA, Philippines - The National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) released yesterday a sketch of the gunman in the failed ambush of a controversial police official in Quezon City last Mar. 10.

A police artist prepared the sketch based on the description given by witnesses in the slay try on Superintendent Napoleon Cauyan, 52.

Cauyan told The Star he revealed to NCRPO chief Director Roberto Rosales the possible motives for the attack on him.

When reached by The STAR yesterday, Rosales said they are presently validating all the information forwarded to him by Cauyan when he visited him at the Armed Forces Medical Center.

“I cannot give you the status of our investigation on Cauyan’s ambush try as yet so as not to jeopardize efforts by police investigators in the field,” said Rosales.

Cauyan, assigned at the Personnel Holding Admin Unit (PHAU) in Camp Crame, is currently recovering from gunshot wounds in both arms and right shoulder.

Police officers who have cases against them are assigned to the PHAU. Cauyan was earlier accused of being involved in car theft when he was with the Highway Patrol Group in Central Luzon. He was also accused of submitting forged documents to enter the police force.

Earlier, Cauyan claimed his work as a policeman has something to do with his failed slay try. He said he played a key role in the NCRPO’s dismantling of the syndicate behind the registration of stolen vehicles at the Land Transportation Office.

Reports reaching Chief Superintendent Elmo San Diego, Quezon City Police District director, showed that four men, riding in tandem on two motorcycles, were involved in the slay try on Cauyan.

Witnesses described the gunman as a slim man who carried a long firearm. He wore a black jacket, blue pants, a police cap, and black shoes.

The driver of the first motorcycle, with the gunman riding behind him, wore a black jacket with white stripes along both arms, a black police cap, denim pants and black shoes.

The driver of the second motorcycle wore a black jacket, a khaki ball cap and khaki pants, while his back rider wore black jacket and black cap, according to witnesses.

Meanwhile, LTO public information office chief Jason Salvador said they are open to any investigation related to the attack on Cauyan.

He said the two persons arrested by a police team led by Cauyan during a raid last year had been suspended for 90 days. The two are workers at the agency’s plate-making plant, and Salvador said there is a pending administrative case against them to determine if they are linked to syndicates purportedly behind the fixers at the LTO.   – With Reinir Padua
