Cop says ambush not related to whistle-blower's slay

- Non Alquitran -

MANILA, Philippines - A police official who survived a slay try in Quezon City last Mar. 10 said his case is not related to the murder of jueteng whistle-blower Wilfredo “Boy” Mayor.

“The slay try on me has something to do with my job as a policeman. It has nothing to do with Mayor’s case,” Superintendent Napoleon Cauyan told The Star.

Cauyan is recuperating at the Armed Forces Medical Center for gunshot wounds in both arms and the right shoulder. A bullet was embedded in his chest but doctors delayed the operation to extract it believing that it is not “life-threatening.”

When reached by The STAR yesterday, Cauyan said he has difficulty moving his body because of his wounds.

He admitted that he stepped on “several influential persons’ toes” in Quezon City while working as a police officer.

Cauyan, who is assigned at the Personnel Holding Admin Office (PHAO) in Camp Crame helped the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) in dismantling syndicates behind the illegal registration of stolen vehicles at the Land Transportation Office. Among those arrested were two LTO employees.

“It’s not only the LTO case but also the other police work I’ve initiated in other syndicates that could be after my head,” he said.

When Mayor was killed in an ambush in Pasay City last Feb. 28, Cauyan’s name cropped up after his police identification card was recovered inside the whistle-blower’s Volvo.

Cauyan admitted that he was acquainted with Mayor and had been working as his agent in Bicol for his anti-diabetes medicine.

He said Mayor borrowed his police identification card so he would not be accosted by traffic enforcers.

Several days after Mayor’s ambush-slay, Cauyan went public claiming he knew of a group who wanted the whistle-blower dead.
