Navotas marks 104th year

At least five major roads in Navotas City would be closed to traffic for six hours today for a grand parade in celebration of the city’s 104th founding anniversary.

Motorists are advised to avoid M. Naval street, Gov. Andres Pascual street, North Bay Boulevard road, C-4 Road and C-3 Road from 11 a.m. up to 5 p.m..

Mayor Toby Tiangco, with city employees and other local officials, would lead an estimated 10,000 participants in the parade of elaborately decorated floats in vivid colors from the school, religious, non-government organizations, business sectors and the city government.

Celebrities, street performers, drum and bugles, drum and lyres, mascots, clowns and jugglers will line up the parade route to provide more color and festivity to the event.

Tiangco said that Malacañang also declared Jan. 16 a special non-working day in Navotas City to give residents “full opportunity to celebrate” the occasion.

Navotas, with 14 barangays and a population of around 265,000, is Metro Manila’s fishing capital, and is considered one of the most competitive and productive local government units in the country.

Navotas used to be a part of Malabon until it was declared a separate town in 1906. Now, Navotas is one of the 16 cities comprising the National Capital Region. – With Pete Laude
