Police find trigger in Taguig car blast

MANILA, Philippines - Police investigating a recent car explosion that killed a businessman in Taguig City said a gasoline-filled can found inside the vehicle triggered the blast.

Senior Superintendent Camilo Cascolan, Taguig Police chief, said result of the investigation conducted by Scene of the Crime Operatives-Southern Police District showed that the combustible material found inside Remigio Ang’s black Honda Civic car, was in fact, gasoline placed in a can at the backseat.

“However, we are still trying to find out what the can of gasoline is doing inside the car and where will the victim use it,” he said.

Ang, 60, died when the car he was driving suddenly exploded as he was about to park the vehicle at the basement parking area of the Serendra 2 building in Taguig City last Dec. 15.

The victim came from shopping for supplies from a nearby mall.

Police earlier ruled out a bomb as the cause of the explosion and noted “spontaneous combustion” as the cause of the incident.

Though the victim’s body was burned beyond recognition, police said it did not sustain lacerations caused by shrapnel.                – Rhodina Villanueva
