1 dead, 1 hurt as bus hits car

MANILA, Philippines - A man who worked as a security officer of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) was killed and his companion hurt when their car was hit by a speeding bus at the corner of Regalado and Mindanao Avenues in Quezon City on Christmas Eve. Police Officer 3 Ferdinand Paglinawan said Renato Rayos, 20, was declared dead on arrival at the East Avenue Medical Center. Rayos’ companion, Jose Pestanas, 40, also a security officer of the INC, suffered injuries. Paglinawan said they have arrested bus driver Jarwin Pantaleon, 28, who is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, physical injury and damage to property. Pestanas was reportedly driving a black Suzuki Esteem with Rayos as his passenger. They were crossing Regalado Avenue from Mindanao Avenue on its way to Lagro when the bus, also crossing Regalado Avenue, smashed into the middle of the car, pinning Rayos. – Reinir Padua
