Immigration nabs Swedish bank rob suspect

-

MANILA, Philippines - The Bureau of Immigration (BI) has arrested a Swedish national accused of robbing a bank in Denmark and fleeing with Danish crowns equivalent to $10 million.

BI Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said Lukas Hasselgren, 37, was caught outside his unit at Adriatico Place Tower II condominium in Ermita, Manila. He said Hasselgren is now the subject of deportation proceedings.

The Swedish embassy said Hasselgren is reportedly the primary suspect when a security cash center was robbed of more than 60 million Danish crowns on Aug. 8, 2008.

Police officials in Denmark and Sweden thanked the BI for apprehending Hasselgren. The BI said Hasselgren is the latest among several fugitives arrested since the agency formed its own BI-Interpol unit early this year.      – Evelyn Macairan
