Estrada, Binay to open school track oval

MANILA, Philippines - Former President Joseph Estrada and Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay will lead students of the University of Makati (Umak) at the inauguration of the university’s Track and Field Oval today.

Estrada will be the guest of honor at the inauguration, which will start at 7 a.m.

Binay said Umak is the first local university to have its own track and field oval that conforms to international standards. The facility is seen as a venue for honing local athletes and for hosting national and international sporting events.

The 400-meter track oval has eight lanes measuring 1.2 meters each, with a two-meter warm-up lane and a two-meter wide promenade. It also has a covered seating gallery, baseball and softball court, shotput area, two long jump and triple jump areas, two hammer and discus throw areas, water jump area, pole vault area and javelin throw area.

“We aim to initiate and host local and international athletic events, and promote sports excellence and physical wellness among our youth. With the University of Makati Track and Field Oval, we will now have the venue to train local athletes. And weare offering our facility to national athletes as well,” Binay said.

Estrada and Binay are the presidential and vice presidential candidates of the United Opposition for the 2010 elections.   – Rhodina Villanueva
