Leptospirosis kills 7, downs 49 others in Valenzuela

MANILA, Philippines - The Valenzuela City health officer reported yesterday seven deaths and 49 people hospitalized due to leptospirosis and fears the death toll will continue to rise.

Dr. Jaime Exconde reminded those who suspect they have leptospirosis to immediately seek medical help because they could suffer liver damage, renal failure or meningitis.

He said his department started receiving reports on the rise of leptospirosis cases in Valenzuela only on Oct. 9 or almost two weeks after tropical storm “Ondoy” swept the metropolis.

He warned residents that while floodwaters have receded, many low-lying areas remain muddy, and the mud could still contain urine contaminated with the bacteria that causes leptospirosis. – Pete Laude
