Nurse falls from jeep, killed by same vehicle

MANILA, Philippines - A 24-year-old nurse was killed when he fell from a passenger jeepney which ran over him as he was trying to chase two males who earlier robbed him inside an FX taxi in Sampaloc, Manila early evening Tuesday.

Ferrarie Tan, a nurse at the Ospital ng Makati, and a resident of Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City, died on the spot due to a broken skull.

Case investigator PO3 Jay Santos said Tan was one of the passengers of an España-bound FX taxi when two armed men declared a holdup. After divesting the passengers of their belongings, the suspects got off the FX taxi and commandeered a passing passenger jeepney. Apparently in an effort to retrieve his belongings, Tan also got off the FX and hitched on the running jeepney. However, one of the suspects who was also holding on the rear of the jeepney, punched Tan who lost his grip on the jeepney and fell face down on the pavement. The rear tire of the jeepney ran over the victim’s head.

Bystanders and traffic enforcers chased the fleeing suspects and caught one of them identified as Stanley Buenamer, 27, a Bahala Na Gang member, of Geronimo st., Sampaloc. A mob lynched him before the arrival of responding policemen. Recovered from Buenamer were a portable play station, a brown envelope containing cash and a .38 caliber revolver with seven bullets.

Santos said the other suspect, identified as Jerome Lambada, 24, a Bahala Na Gang member, of Dela Fuente st., Sampaloc, was arrested by Quezon City policemen and is now under detention at the La Loma police station.

The victim’s mother Carolyn told The STAR she could not believe what had happened to her only son. She said her son had always reminded her to be careful in riding jeepneys since most of the drivers had the habit of speeding away even before the passenger had taken her seat.

She said the victim was her second child, the eldest of whom is her 33-year-old daughter.

Santos said charges of robbery with homicide were filed against the suspects.
