Guard discovers tunnel to Quezon City bank's vault

- Reinir Padua -

MANILA, Philippines - An alert security guard discovered an underground tunnel leading to the vault of a Quezon City bank and foiled a suspected burglary attempt.

Superintendent Alex Sintin, commander of the Quezon City Police District-Station 3, said a roving security guard found the tunnel leading into a bank along Tandang Sora Road in Barangay Sangandaan Wednesday afternoon and told village officials, who called up the police about the discovery.

“The end of the tunnel was just about two meters under the flooring of the portion of the bank where the vault was located,” Sintin told reporters in an interview yesterday.

Sintin said the tunnel starts at a vacant lot beside the bank, where they found iron bars and shovels.

He said there was a wall separating the vacant lot and the bank and the tunnel had already crossed the division.

Sintin said there are some shanties at the vacant lot and the occupants, including the caretaker of the property, claimed they never saw the ones who created the tunnel. He expressed disbelief over the claim.

Sintin said after the discovery of the tunnel, police discreetly monitored the area, hoping the ones who created the tunnel would come back.
