Manila councilors want boarders registered

MANILA, Philippines - The Manila City Council proposed over the weekend an ordinance that requires the registration of bed spacers, boarders and tenants at barangay offices.

Vice Mayor Isko Moreno, who presides over the council, and councilors Ernesto Isip Jr., Ernesto Dionisio Jr. and Maria Shiela Lacuna-Pangan authored the proposed ordinance.

If approved, landlords should oversee the registration of their prospective tenants, who should present a valid identification card, photo and bio-data.

“Manila continues to be the destination of thousands of students and jobseekers. But it’s a sad fact that tenants, boarders and bed spacers are virtual strangers who are admitted to the family home and share the dwelling without knowing their true identity and origin,” the proposed ordinance said.

Violators may be fined P500, according to the measure.   – Sandy Araneta
