MANILA, Philippines - A detainee allegedly strangled his live-in partner when she visited him at the Manila City Jail Wednesday afternoon.
Police said Joan Fernandez was discovered unconscious in a makeshift cubicle by an inmate after she and her partner, Nelson Danao, rented the cubicle to have some privacy.
She was rushed to the jail infirmary and transferred to the Jose Reyes Memorial Medical Center, where she was declared dead on arrival.
Police Officer 2 Jaime Gonzales Jr. said there were no visible signs of injury on Fernandez’s body except for ligature marks on her neck, indicating she may have been strangled to death.
Danao, who is facing charges of robbery with intimidation, was arrested by jail officials. Police said Danao could be suffering from paranoia and jealousy may have prompted him to kill Fernandez.
