Suspect in Ateneo student's death can't leave RP
MANILA, Philippines - A Quezon City regional trial court has issued a hold departure order against a motorist who allegedly ran over and killed a fourth-grade student at the Ateneo de Manila University parking lot almost two months ago.
Branch 106 Judge Angelene Mary Quimpo-Sale barred Ma. Theresa Torres from leaving the country while she is on trial for allegedly killing Julian Carlo “Amiel” Alcantara last Feb. 24. Sale had granted an urgent motion filed by Amiel’s father, Jose Alcantara.
Torres has been charged with two counts of reckless imprudence resulting in serious physical injuries and one count of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide. Amiel’s sister, Janna, and his nanny, Tata Suarez, were also injured in the incident.
Torres, 41, has been on out bail while waiting for her arraignment on May 29.
As of yesterday, the Bureau of Immigration has yet to receive a copy of the court order. – Katherine Adraneda, Evelyn Macairan
