3 dead in South Luzon Expressway traffic mishap

- Mike Frialde and Ed Amoroso -

MANILA, Philippines - Three people, including two public school teachers, died in a vehicular accident along the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) in Taguig City yesterday morning.

Reports reaching the police said Nazario Caro; his wife, Nesena; and Aurelia Guevarra were on their way to work at the Department of Education Division of Schools in Pasay City when the accident happened at about 5 a.m. Nesena and Guevarra held the rank of master teachers, according to identification cards recovered from their bodies by the police.

Nazario was driving a maroon Nissan Terrano (YDA-895) along the SLEX when the car rammed a concrete column of the Skyway, according to one report. Traffic investigators said the impact made the vehicle turn over at least three times before hitting a Makati-bound Eagle Star bus driven by Alfredo Pereno.

Another report has it that the Terrano hit a barrier and spun out of control.

Probers said Pereno and at least one passenger were taken to the South Superhighway Medical Center for treatment of their injuries. The passengers of the Terrano were also taken to the same hospital, where they were declared dead from severe head and body injuries.

Police said they suspect Nazario lost control of the wheel before the first collision occurred. They have invited Pereno for questioning as investigators have yet to determine the cause of the accident, which caused a traffic jam that reached up to San Pedro, Laguna.
